Title: An EMT-Phasor Co-Simulation Setup for Studying Reconfiguration of Distribution System with Inverter Based Resources
Abstract: The modular multilevel matrix converter (M3C) represents a direct AC/AC converter configuration with significant potential for high-power applications in the medium voltage range. Given the increased number of sub-modules and the control complexity, HIL testing is recommended to validate the operation of the converter and its control before deployment in the field. Additionally, the real-time simulation of such topology remains challenging because of the increased number of converter valves compared to a classical MMC. This paper presents a modeling approach based on an equivalent circuit method both efficient and precise, and designed for real-time simulation of the M3C. The proposed method can be used for HIL testing or accelerated simulation.

Title: An EMT-Phasor Co-Simulation Setup for Studying Reconfiguration of Distribution System with Inverter Based Resources
Abstract: Distributed Energy Resources (DER) are being integrated into the distribution system rapidly. Inverter serves as the critical interface to connect DERs and the electric distribution system. The inverter-based resources’ (IBRs) performance and behavior in the wide-area distribution system needs to be analyzed appropriately through high-fidelity simulations. While electromagnetic transient (EMT) simulations can provide accurate and detailed simulation results in the context of simulating IBRs, it is often limited to a small-scale test system due to its computational complexity. In this context, EMT-phasor cosimulation is a promising alternative, which provides a tradeoff between scalability and accuracy by combining them appropriately. Such an approach can reduce the computational burden in simulating a large portion of test system in phasordomain but still provide sufficient details for a part of the system with IBRs in the EMT-domain. To this end, this paper introduces a new co-simulation setup that considers and allows changes between the grid-forming and grid-following modes of an IBR. The islanded operation of a distribution system with IBRs is simulated. A part of IEEE 123-node distribution system is utilized to validate the co-simulation approach against a full-EMT simulation. The proposed co-simulation approach is expanded for simulating the IEEE 2500-node distribution system with seven IBRs for a system reconfiguration study with expected results.
