Our Solution
OPAL-RT supports IEC 61850 interfaces to connect various IEDs with higher-level systems such as SCADA, via the Manufacturer Message Specification (MMS) protocol. Using a standard network interface card, this protocol can be easily and rapidly integrated into any simulation model along with the other IEC 61850 protocols, GOOSE and Sampled Values. With the proper user configuration, a driver is initialized on the target simulator at the start of the simulation and begins publishing specified data for use in reporting with SCADA and other system monitoring software. The IEC 61850 driver makes use of asynchronous threads on dedicated cores in order to achieve high performance. The IEC 61850 configuration naming and object modelling is based on a Substation Configuration Language (SCL) and can be easily imported from Configured IED Description (CID), IED Configuration Description (ICD), or Substation Configuration Description (SCD) files of the various equipment under test. Messages support native complex data objects and attributes with digital and analog values. IEC 61850 is available as an add-on to IEC 61850 GOOSE, or as a bundle offering IEC 61850 GOOSE, Sampled Values, and MMS.
About IEC 61850
IEC 61850 is a standard for the design of electrical substation automation systems, which defines fast communication of events (GOOSE), data set samples (Sampled Values), or communication with higher-level systems such as SCADA (MMS) through Ethernet frames. Standard naming and object modelling are based on a Substation Configuration Language (SCL), describing data exchange at device and substation levels. IEC 61850-8-1 Generic Object Oriented Substation Events (GOOSE) is a control model mechanism in which any format of data (status, value) is grouped into a data set that must be sent and received within a time period of 3 milliseconds for the most restrictive protection applications. IEC 61850-9-2 Sampled Values (SV) are for the fast transmission and reception of voltages, currents and status information between transformers and transducers (CT, PT…), and primary power system equipment. IEC 61850 Manufacturer Message Specification (MMS) is for the communication of data between IEDs and high-level entities such as SCADA or RTU.
