OPAL-RT TECHNOLOGIES and Coordinador Eléctrico Nacional (CEN) Sign a Collaboration Agreement to Model a Digital Twin of the Chilean Electrical Network
[MONTREAL, February 23rd, 2022] OPAL-RT TECHNOLOGIES is pleased to announce a collaborative agreement with Coordinador Eléctrico Nacional (CEN) of Chile to start using OPAL-RT's real-time simulation expertise and experience in the modeling of a digital twin of their electrical network. CEN is responsible for coordinating the operation of the Chilean electric network in order to ensure its security and economic operation. The network includes 35,501 km of transmission lines, extended over 3,100 km of territory, and has the capacity to generate 25,284 MWs of energy—sufficient for around 97% of the Chilean population.
[MONTREAL, February 23rd, 2022] OPAL-RT TECHNOLOGIES is pleased to announce a collaborative agreement with Coordinador Eléctrico Nacional (CEN) of Chile to start using OPAL-RT’s real-time simulation expertise and experience in the modeling of a digital twin of their electrical network.
One of the key objectives (and an area of specialty for OPAL-RT) is to evaluate the performance of EMT-type simulations in real time on high-performance servers using cloud technology–as well as the modeling, simulation and testing of setups via Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) and Software-in-the-Loop (SIL) testing in CEN’s laboratory. The agreement foresees collaborative work with universities and research centers toward the development of research and development projects in the Chilean electricity sector.
“The alliance will allow the development of digital twins for advanced electrical studies, analyze the security and reliability of the network and verify the performance of systems with a high insertion of variable renewable energies, among others,” said Jaime Peralta Rodríguez, advisory board member at Coordinador Eléctrico Nacional (CEN). “These agreements aim to reinforce the capacities, tools and models currently used by CEN for the analysis of the electrical system in scenarios of high insertion of renewable energies.”
OPAL-RT’s HYPERSIM platform was selected for this project due to its open nature, flexibility, accuracy and its scalable hardware architecture. It offers high-speed parallel processing to enable the most challenging utilities, manufacturers and research centers to run faster, more realistic tests in order to meet the rapidly evolving requirements of the energy sector.
“Progress such as the understanding with CEN in the realm of the digital twin has become increasingly exciting for us at OPAL-RT. We hope the high-accuracy of the HYPERSIM Digital Twin will provide system operators with real-time evaluation of the grid capability to return to stable condition after a fault–even for critical grids integrating large quantities of renewable energy and inverter-based systems,” said Jean Bélanger, CEO and CTO of OPAL-RT TECHNOLOGIES.
These alliances and innovative initiatives position CEN at the level of other world-class operators that are entering and transitioning to more advanced environments of modeling and simulation of electrical systems with high penetration of renewable energies through the use of digital twins, such as the AEMO system operator, in Australia.
