OPAL-RT TECHNOLOGIES Pushes Connectivity with Release of OP4520 FPGA Processor and I/O Expansion Unit

OPAL-RT TECHNOLOGIES announced today the product release of the OP4520 FPGA processor and I/O expansion unit for HIL and RCP simulators. The OP4520 advances the OP4500 family of compact real-time digital simulators from OPAL-RT by adding Xilinx Kintex-7 FPGA capability to provide additional I/O connectivity to existing simulators.

The OP4520 advances the OP4500 family of compact real-time digital simulators from OPAL-RT by adding Xilinx Kintex-7 FPGA capability to provide additional I/O connectivity to existing simulators. It can provide up to 128 I/O channels and offers high speed SFP communication or PCI-Express links. The OP4520 can be used in a variety of configurations including point-to-point connections with existing OP4500-family simulators, and distributed I/O for large HVDC controllers. “The OP4520 pushes into new territory of connectivity and processing ability for the OPAL-RT real time simulator product line,” said Christophe Brayet, Global Product Manager at OPAL-RT. “With up to 128 additional I/Os as well as high speed SFP and PCI-Express links, it alters conventional ideas of what can be accomplished with affordable simulators.” At its essence, the OP4520 is an I/O compact expansion box version of the OP4510, including 128 I/O channels with signal conditioning, 12 RS422 channels or 12 50 Mbps fiber optic channels, and four 5 Gbits/s high-speed communication ports (SFPs). It is designed to synchronize with other units in the OP4500 family, as well as the OP5600 HIL simulator. It is available in a variety of I/O configurations, each standardized to target specific applications, and is compatible with the entire OPAL-RT software suite: eHS, MMC, eMEGAsim, HYPERSIM, and ePHASORsim. “When we released the OP4510 HIL and RCP Simulator a few months ago, it shifted the position of the OP4500 family in terms of what can be done with this type of device,” said Jean Bélanger, CEO and CTO of OPAL-RT TECHNOLOGIES. “The OP4520 builds on that momentum, and we’re very proud of where this product line is going.”
